Israel built a wall, over 400 miles long and up to 24 feet high, to protect Israeli settlements from angry Palestinians. This wall also separates Palestinian towns from one another, making normal commerce and community impossible. This is the Palestinians' “Wailing Wall”, a potent symbol of their oppression. The wall constitutes a major impediment to achieving lasting peace. If Bush had any courage, he would echo Reagan's demand of the Soviet leader Gorbachev that he remove the Berlin wall. Bush would challenge the Israelis to live up to the promise of their state and maintain a hope for peace. Don't hold your breath. More likely the Republican candidates will propose to contract the Israelis to build a wall between the US and Mexico.

Bush said today (Jan 10) that the Palestinian state should be a 'homeland'. Does this mean a right of return for the Palestinian diaspora? If so, this is a huge change in the American position and a promising move. More likely, Bush misspoke and Sec. Rice, who looks very anxious whenever her boss speaks, will have to 'clarify', i.e., deny.
